Enabling better global research outcomes in soil, plant & environmental monitoring.

Mining & Landfill Applications

Monitoring of soils, plants and the environment at mine sites and landfills is critical. ICT International is a recognised world leader in the supply and manufacture of high quality, precision instruments which can measure water movement through soils, under tailing dams, or other sensitive sites. Our equipment is commonly used to monitor or select plant species for mine site rehabilitation, monitor water movement through the soil profile, provide data for water budgets and catchment management, and other applications.

ICT International has been involved in many mining and landfill projects all around the world. For example, in Peru sap flow instruments are being used to monitor tree water use so trees can act as “bio-pumps”. This way, water is managed cheaply and easily for mining operations such as coal seam gas. Our sap flow equipment is currently being employed in numerous mining operations across Western Australia and South Australia to monitor groundwater dependent ecosystems and threatened species.

ICT International has been involved with numerous landfill projects in Victoria, including at Clayton, Ballarat and Wangaratta, for precision monitoring of water movement to comply with EPA Victoria standards. ICT International has also been involved on projects with Sydney Water, New South Wales, on monitoring water disposal from sewage treatment plants.

Scientists and engineers at ICT International have over 35 years’ experience in the industry. Scientists at ICT International have published research findings in international peer reviewed journals, and as such ICT International can custom design monitoring solutions for your mining or landfill project.

Landfills and “Phytocaps”

ICT International has established itself as a leading expert in providing instrumentation, sensors, data loggers and expertise to landfills and phytocap projects. ICT International monitoring equipment, such as the MP406 Soil Moisture Sensor, SMM Soil Moisture Meter, SOM Soil Oxygen Meter with the ICTO2 Soil Oxygen Sensor, and the AWS Automatic Weather Station, are commonly used in landfill projects. These instruments monitor the water balance of a site, with the MP406 sensors acting as a data logging lysimeter. The AWS automatically calculates Penman-Monteith Evapotranspiration. Tipping buckets can measure water inputs such as rainfall, and outputs such as drainage.
